Acrylic paint on canvas
November 3, 2019, I went to Jingjai Market and my acquaintance introduced me to Cin. I happened to overhear her conversation with friends and felt deeply impressed. They were talking about eternal love, which Cin told her friends was impossible. Upon hearing that, I wanted to share my experience so I ventured to say: I think there are two types of love. First, self-centered love which entails possessiveness. The second is the kind of love that is non-possessive and egoless. We may use the same word to mean two completely different things.
Cin said that egoless and non-possessive love is not real love. In the ordinary sense of the world, that cannot be called love because it lacks both subject and object.
I partially agreed with this, because in the state of oneness we cannot really articulate it in words. But when we want to communicate with other people, the word "love" is the closest in meaning to that feeling.
After that, we carried on talking about truth and science because she graduated with a science degree. Part of the conversation was about problems that emerge from people's lack of ccommon sense, and I asked her what "common sense" meant.
She said it was about a basic ability to think and apply simple reasoning in ways that other people can understand.
I then asked her that if anyone can understand, doesn't it imply that we all have common sense? But then why are we still entrenched in problems and suffering?
She said it is not really a selfish instinct. Common sense comprises wisdom, self-awareness, self-care, and also empathy.
Then I told her that that is the kind of egoless love we were talking about earlier. In that case, common sense cannot really be called common sense, because it is not that common after all. Isn't that right? Cin said that she decided to use this word because it's easier to communicate with others. In order to help people understand the truth, the approach must be simple and easy.
I thought to myself that now I understand that self-awareness is intuition and love. It is common, natural, and simple. However, though self-awareness already exists within all of us and is certainly achievable, we don't strive for it. Perhaps we don't think it's important, or it's just so simple that we overlook its significance.
